Coach Jodie McGarity Jr.
Who Am I?
I was born and raised in San Antonio, TX, and am a die-hard San Antonio Spurs fan. I am a former player and still play recreationally. I'm not a flashy Jordan-like player, but I just get the job done. As an undersized small/power forward (6 feet 6 inches), I powered my way to the professional level of basketball, both as a player and a coach.
As an athlete, I had a huge passion for football growing up and desired to become a professional football player in the NFL. Things changed for Jodie as he played basketball for the first time as a 7th grader in junior high. I continued to participate in both football and basketball until my decision came as a sophomore at Sam Houston High School to commit to basketball only.
I collected All-City honors during his 3-year varsity stint as well as 3rd team All-State in Texas as a senior. I never seriously thought about college until I was approached by Kirby Johnson of Temple College (Temple, TX), who was the only coach to talk to me personally about playing for them and receiving a free education. I became motivated when hearing a speech from my coach that mentioned that one of my team members would experience professional success in basketball. I was not the one mentioned, which lit a fire inside to prove any doubters wrong.
My collegiate accomplishments grew as I matured in the game of basketball. While at Temple College (1994-1996) under Kirby Johnson, I proved to be a reliable role player for the Temple Leopards during my two-year commitment to the junior college. I helped the Leopards lead the nation in points per game (113.3) and set a national record for the most points scored in a game (174 against Granger Junior College). I averaged 13.4 PPG and 6.3 RPG in my two years there. Just effort and hard work were what I gave.
Temple’s up-tempo style of play allowed me to excel at California State San Bernardino (1996-1997) under Danny Aye. There I became more reliable as a scoring threat, averaging 22.1 PPG and 6.7 RPG. I was sixth in the nation in field goal percentage at 66.4%. After a coaching change at Cal State, I transferred to Huston-Tillotson University (1997-1998) under Terrance Littlefield, which is an NAIA school. I made my mark by averaging 20.7 points and 10.6 rebounds in my senior year. I earned Big State Conference MVP and recorded 25 double-doubles out of 27 games.
My professional career has led me to play for the Austin Cyclones (semi-professional team) from 1999-2002, where he was selected to First Team all four years of his commitment. Since January of 2000, I've also been heavily involved in coaching and training athletes, preparing them for life’s challenges. My coaching career began at Del Valle ISD in January 2000, for four years. I've coached four AAU teams (girls & boys), which I found called the Austin Disciples. I had a two-year experience and coached the junior varsity team and was the assistant varsity coach to Kacey Benson at Hyde Park High School. I was previously the Basketball Director and Head Coach for an Austin Area-based Homeschooled Basketball team, the Central Texas Saints from 2018-2022. As of March 2023, I've returned to my first love of the Austin Royals as the Basketball Director.
